For nearly two years, Emily and I have worked on BE. Magazine nearly every day. In fact, we registered for our first domain name (remember when we were at beyourrealyou.com?) two years ago last week. We published our first articles on January 1, 2015, with the goal of creating a website to tell the stories of real life women who were accomplishing great things.
In the 22 months since our first post, we have published nearly 200 more articles, worked with over 30 fantastic writers, moved to a new website home and learned (the hard way) how to “self-host” a website. We’ve spent countless hours writing, editing, emailing, interviewing, figuring out social media, and learning. We heard the stories of women across the country and tried our best to share their experiences–starting their own companies, traveling, overcoming tragedy, speaking out for what they thought was right. We’ve met amazing people through BE. Magazine.
And we’ve learned a lot. We had to learn a lot of behind the scenes web stuff that still confuses me. We had to learn how to communicate our vision through words and social media. We had to learn how to build an editorial calendar, how to edit articles while still retaining each author’s unique voice, and how to work together, combine our visions and create something for which we had no template.
I think I speak for both Emily and myself when I say it has been incredible. So difficult, yes, stressful, trying, just plain hard, but incredible.
But now, it is coming to an end. These two months of “hiatus” have shown us that now is not the right time for us to grow this website. As sad as we are to say it, we need to prioritize other things, and unfortunately, that means we need to de-prioritize our work on this site.
We still believe in our original goal of sharing real life stories and we hope, one day, to have the opportunity to pick back up again. But for now, we have to close this chapter.
We can’t tell you how much we appreciate all of you who have read what we’ve written, encouraged and supported us, shared our work, shared your experiences, written for us, commented, interacted with this site in any way…it has meant so much to us that there were people out there who believed in us that much. We can’t thank you enough.
We’re sad to leave this project behind, but we are excited for what lies ahead. In the meantime, we hope you all will continue to be your real selves, strive to find your stories, and be the strong, sassy, bold women we know you already are.
And we will do the same.
